2022, the appearance held two premieres. On the one hand, medianet not only ensured a professional appearance of the companies in the Business Area but, with the friendly support of Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, also enabled four indie developers to exhibit their games at the Indie Arena Booth in the Entertainment Area. Furthermore, with Catalonia and Catalan Arts, a partner country was on board for the reception for the first time.
The Berlin-Brandenburg reception marked the official opening of the pavilion on the first day of the fair. After the welcome by Jeannine Koch, CEO of medianet, Dr. Severin Fischer, Head of the Senate Chancellery Berlin, highlighted the advantages of Berlin-Brandenburg as a games location. In addition to an increase in funding and the implementation of a new funding guideline specifically for games, Fischer also mentioned the importance of political support for the fastest growing industry in the capital region.
Michael Liebe from Kickstarter, the official partner of the reception, then took the floor to point out the importance of networks and the possibility of crowdfunding as additional support. Finally, Neus Mèlich introduced Catalan Arts Games and opened the buffet, which consisted of an exquisite mix of traditional Berlin specialties and Catalan tapas.
Another highlight was the visit of State Secretary Michael Biel to the Berlin-Brandenburg booth on August 25. What Dr. Severin Fischer mentioned in his opening speech, Biel chiseled in stone: “One million euros for the Berlin games and XR scene – with this, we are clearly committing ourselves to the expansion of this future industry. This is in line with our goal of becoming the flagship for new media funding in Germany. The numerous new production and sales companies in the games and VR sector in the capital region show us that we are on the right track. These additional funds are a strong signal to the industry. Berlin is games capital and the Berlin Senate will help strengthen and expand the industry.”
In 2022, gamescom hosted 1,100 exhibitors from more than 50 countries and 265,000 visitors. The livestreams had more than 130 million views. In 2023, the trade fair will take place from August 23 to 27. Hopefully, this will again include a joint Berlin-Brandenburg appearance organized by medianet.
